Ernest Carter "Athenian Landscape"

Ernest Carter (1924–1992) was one of the most important pioneers of abstract painting in Greece, introducing the first non-representational trends in the country as early as 1951.

His work "Athenian Landscape" (or Attica Landscape), created in the late 1950s (around 1959), is a characteristic example of his transition from representation to abstraction, where Greek nature and urban light are deconstructed into geometric forms and color planes.

The Technique:

1959 coincides with a period of great flourishing of post-war abstraction in Athens (marked, for example, by the establishment of the gallery "New Forms" in the same year). Carter's "Athenian Landscape" does not faithfully represent the buildings or hills of the city, but translates the Attic light and the structure of the environment with free, expressionistic or geometric brushstrokes.

His Journey:
Born in Corfu, he studied for a time at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Although health problems interrupted his studies, he evolved into a bold creator who experimented intensely with color and form.
