This book was written to adequately serve - we hope - the needs of an introductory course in Complex Analysis in a Mathematics Department. The prerequisite knowledge to read this book is a good understanding of the calculus of functions of a real variable as well as some knowledge of certain elements from the calculus of functions of several real variables (mainly basic knowledge of partial derivatives). Nevertheless, a considerable mathematical maturity is required from the reader, enough to be able to understand the ε-δ arguments related to the limits of functions.
One could argue that Complex Analysis has something to offer to every mathematician, as it has applications in various fields of Mathematics such as Analysis itself, Algebra, Geometry, Differential Equations, Number Theory, and Mathematical Physics. This realization certainly influenced the writing of this book. However, the main guiding principle was the thought of writing a book that contains a sufficient number of worked examples and exercises that support the theory. In a way, our goal was to write a “Complex Calculus”.
Regarding the structure of the book, there are seven chapters and each chapter (except the third) is divided into two parts. The first part contains the basic theory, with examples and exercises of the corresponding chapter, and the second part, titled “SPECIAL TOPICS”, contains further development of the theory, with applications and exercises that usually address the more demanding reader.
