Camden, New Jersey, 1980. Abandoned houses, closed industries, poor neighborhoods. A teenager, Pete, disappears, and his mother Louisa dies the next morning from heartbreak. His sister, twelve-year-old Mini, orphaned from parents, unwittingly intrudes into her classmate Leto's life and overturns her family's certainties. She opens cracks that are hard to close; they have their roots in the past, in the American dream, in second and third generations of immigrants, in the decline and decay of the city, in lost opportunities and in choices that went wrong. And as Leto's adoptive father, Bazel Kambanis, tries to find out what went wrong on the way, he confronts the ghosts and fears of his childhood; and as his wife Susan distances herself from him and their dull, uninspired life together, Mini and Leto seem to mature in a world that is harshly and unjustly made. Time, like snowflakes, deceives, slips away, and gets lost. Along with them.
