Finally found!!!! Yes, the very first My Little Pony movie from 1986 on DVD, in an amazing version dubbed in Greek.
My Little Pony: The Movie (1986) – A Magical Adventure on the Big Screen
In 1986, Hasbro’s little ponies left the children’s rooms and television episodes to appear on the big screen with “My Little Pony: The Movie.” Directed by Mike Joens, the film was the franchise’s first cinematic attempt, combining the innocence of the characters with an adventure full of magic, humor, and… dark elements that frightened many young viewers!
The plot follows the ponies of Dream Valley as they face the terrifying witch Hydia and her daughters, Reeka and Draggle. The evil witches plan to unleash the “Smooze,” a purple, sticky, destructive slime-cloud that threatens to swallow everything in its path. To save their kingdom, the ponies embark on a perilous journey, aided by new friends such as the Flutter Ponies.
The movie features voice talents that became iconic. The famous Rhea Perlman (from the sitcom Cheers) lent her voice to the witch Hydia, while Danny DeVito’s daughter, Tracey Ullman, voices one of the villains. The film’s music added a distinctive touch, with songs reminiscent of Broadway musicals.
The film was released in theaters the same year as Transformers: The Movie, also a Hasbro production, aiming to support toy sales. Despite the glamorous distribution and extensive promotion, the film did not perform well at the box office and was shown in only limited theaters in the U.S.
Many critics at the time considered the content “too dark for children,” especially the scenes with the Smooze, which, however, made it a cult favorite among fans. In Greece, the film was shown in a dubbed version in the 1980s and later released on VHS, becoming a collectible for VHS enthusiasts.
The introduction of the Flutter Ponies had a clear commercial goal: to launch a new line of Hasbro toys.
Although the movie did not achieve the commercial success Hasbro had hoped for, it left its mark as a nostalgic and somewhat scary memory for children of the 80s. Today, VHS collectors and dedicated bronies hunt for the original edition, and the Smooze scenes are still discussed as an example of how a children’s film can be darker than expected.
The film was initially planned to run for 90 minutes but was cut to 86 to fit a double feature with other animated movies.
Hasbro had considered creating a sequel, but low earnings canceled the project.
When the movie was released on VHS and later on DVD, it became highly collectible, as finding copies in either format is extremely rare.
