This is a modern fairy tale, based on the eponymous book by Roald Dahl, which we could call "Iight", a children's version of "Carrie, a burst of rage". Just like the heroine of Brian De Palma, the six-year-old Matilda has the gift of telekinesis, which she uses with greater wisdom, even if sometimes it is for something macabre, as in the case where she terrorizes the school principal with an attack of fake ghosts. Danny DeVito remained excessively faithful to the spirit and style of the book, giving us a charming anti-authoritarian allegory, always seen from the children's perspective. The points that satirize the petty-bourgeois, kitsch spirit of Matilda's parents are more successful. In contrast, the scenes at school, where the little students face the whims of the paranoid principal every day, are certainly very funny, but tend to lean too much towards caricature, resulting in a loss of subtlety.
