Hallucinogenic, surrealistic but also Hitchcockian at its core, the film by the unique Alejandro Jodorowsky stands proudly alongside the cult masterpieces he delivered in the 70s, with a collection of dreamlike images building a different approach to the thriller genre.

Director, writer, actor, musician, mime, comic artist, and spiritual guru, the Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky has soared into the realm of cult myth, with just nine feature films (essentially seven, as two are disowned) over a span of seven decades, which have captured a wholly unique and sui generis artistic vision and revealed a cinema that is uncompromising and dazzling, visually magnificent and rich in symbolism and surrealistic hues, open to psychoanalytic, metaphysical, and religious interpretations and timelessly capable of shocking and thrilling in equal measure.

One of the most characteristic and representative films of this very special filmography is undoubtedly "Santa Sangre," which Jodorowsky shot after a long absence of nine years, partly due to his disappointment with the artistic and commercial failure of "Tusk," whose meager budget limited his always grand ambitions, and partly due to a new form of therapy he invented and developed himself, which he called psychomagic and is a combination of Jung's teachings, tarot interpretation, and a mysticism that speaks directly to the subconscious.
