OLD HANDMADE TURKISH ROSARY, MADE OF COOK WOOD WITH STRUCK SILVER CARVINGS.

The worry beads in Greece historically served as a symbol of prestige and power for the elite, and on the other hand, as an accessory for people from the underworld, the rebetes, and the hashish users. The underworld toughs held worry beads, as did the Chief of the Gendarmerie.

The lords and the prominent figures held large and heavy worry beads made of amber beads, which necessarily had a rich silk tassel for them to caress. Over the years, toughs, bullies, koutzavakis, hashish users, lumpens, and rebetes appeared in Greece, groups that were socially unaligned and unadaptable to the then high society. Each class tends to compete, showcase, and differentiate itself from the others. One way is to create its own symbols. Thus, the toughs would twirl worry beads made of cheap materials and bang the beads to declare their presence, deliberately annoying the people around them. They also removed the tassel because it was inconvenient for twirling and banging the beads. The economically weaker did the same, as the silk tassel was costly.
