In 1993, Marie Gesto disappeared as she was leaving a supermarket in Hollywood. The case was taken over by detective Harry Bosch, but Marie was never found, alive or dead. Bosch, now in the Open-Unsolved Cases unit, always has Gesto's file on his desk. One day he receives a call from the District Attorney: A man, accused of two heinous murders, agrees to confess to some other crimes he has committed, as long as he avoids the death penalty. One of these is the murder of Marie Gesto. Bosch is ordered to interrogate the alleged murderer himself and ensure that he is not lying to avoid execution. Thus, he comes face to face with a man he has been searching for - and hating - for so many years. And when he learns that back in 1993, he and his partner overlooked a piece of evidence that could have led to the arrest of Marie's murderer - and prevented all the murders that followed - he is shaken. And everything he thought he had achieved in all those years of his career begins to crumble...
