The material was aimed to symmetrically cover the requirements of the subject matter.
Thus, the first chapter refers to seismic excitation and the general characteristics of the response, while the second chapter analyzes in the greatest possible detail – without any calculations – the mechanical operation and seismic pathology of the composite frame of multi-storey buildings.
In the third chapter, various methods of seismic calculation are developed based on the discrete model of structures and using matrix notations, according to the requirements of an automatic calculation with a computer.
In contrast, the fourth chapter presents in a unified manner and with several elements of originality the basic principles of the simplified calculation of multi-storey buildings as simple cantilevers, based on the continuous model and using numerical tables.
However, the diversity of the seismic frame of buildings necessitates a more detailed analysis, depending on its structure and using both the discrete and continuous models. For this reason, in the fifth chapter, pure systems that exhibit simpler elastic behavior are examined separately, while the next two chapters are dedicated to the study of mixed systems, the sixth for symmetrical and the seventh for asymmetrical, due to their more prudent behavior in space. A clear understanding of this behavior is believed to be achieved with the help of the three-pole method that we recently developed and which is presented in the seventh chapter.
Finally, in the eighth chapter, a rather brief reference is made to second-order phenomena without particular completeness requirements.
The drafting of the extensive Appendix A was deemed necessary not only for the more accurate calculation of the cores based on Vlassov's theory but mainly because this theory achieves the calculation and understanding of the overall static operation of the structures in space.
Appendix B contains the required numerical tables to facilitate calculations in the case of applying the continuous model, while Appendix C presents basic elements of matrix statics and programming on the computer.
