“LETTERS OF MADAME DE SEVIGNE”

“LETTRES DE MADAME DE SEVIGNE” ("Letters of Madame de Sévigné"). Edition 1900-1920 by the house “HACHETE” of Paris.
More than 1100 letters from the Marquise Marie de Sévigné, to her daughter and her friends, constitute a monument of French literature with exceptional historical significance. Although these letters were written as private correspondence without the intention of publication, they are considered a prime example of French classicism and an invaluable historical source as they serve as a "living newspaper" and describe the high society of the time, the royal court of Versailles, scandals and intrigues of the nobility, political trials, wars, festivities, and theatrical performances (Racine, Molière, etc.). The Marquise de Sévigné, by virtue of her position at the Emperor's court, through her letters, transforms into a historical treasure for the 17th century in France, known as the "Great French Century".
The book features a hardcover binding of the period with embossed decoration on the cover and a gold-printed title on the spine. Price 35 euros.
