Cicero was the greatest orator of the Romans and the true founder of a Roman system of philosophy. He was also a politician, historian, letter writer, and poet. With Cicero, Latin prose became a rival to the excellent Greek prose. Cicero was a philhellene and admirer of the Greek spirit, but also a nationalist. Cicero's speech 'In Defense of Titus Annius Milo' is considered one of his masterpieces, a model of perfect rhetorical speech. The speech that has survived is not the speech that Cicero delivered at Milo's trial. It is the speech that was written by Cicero a few years after Milo's trial and conviction. When Cicero sent this speech, which survives today, to Milo who was living in self-imposed exile in Marseille, Milo ironically wrote to Cicero: 'Cicerone, si ita dixisses, non ego ederem pisces barbatos' (Cicero, if you had spoken like this, I would not have eaten the beautiful fish of Marseille).
