Presentation
MARIKA TATAFYLIANI, a citizen lady, both educated and bohemian, through the long narrative of her life, refers simultaneously, sometimes briefly and sometimes in detail, to incidents and people, with an emphasis on the social life of the Greeks and Turks and their relationships, as well as her fellow citizens belonging to other minority groups, which co-shape the anthropogeographical identity of the City of the last century. Her discourse is often interrupted by heartbreaking interludes of her disturbed memory, haunted by the unhealed wounds of the shocking period for the Greek community - and for all Hellenism - of the premeditated Turkish pogrom of September 1955 against any Greek element, which - with the assistance of other measures that had preceded or followed the Events - led to the shrinkage of the Greek Orthodox community of Istanbul.
