When the Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs (1987, Babel)

An elderly couple of English people living alone in the countryside prepare an anti-nuclear shelter when they learn that a nuclear war is imminent. Translation of "When the Wind Blows", a comic product of its time, commenting on the "balance of terror" during the Cold War. The original comic was published in 1982, became a radio "play" in England in 1983, and a cartoon film in 1986 with music by Roger Waters, David Bowie, Genesis, Squeeze, and Paul Hardcastle. The title is based on a phrase from the government pamphlet Protect and Survive (survival guide in case of a nuclear attack), which is heavily satirized in the comic (the radioactive dust will cause the greatest destruction falling wherever the wind blows) and in the lullaby "Rock-a-bye, baby, in the tree top. When the wind blows, the cradle will rock."
