Performance Program Our Heritage

Premiered at the National Theatre in the 2024-2025 season

"The Inheritance" by Matthew Lopez, directed by Giannis Moschou, follows a group of gay men in New York City in the late 2010s. Inspired by E.M. Forster's novel "Maurice", the play connects three generations of gay men, exploring memory, the trauma of AIDS, and identity.
The play follows the lives of Eric and Toby, two young men in New York, whose relationship is tested by the arrival of other men and their personal ambitions.
The connection to the past: The author E.M. Forster himself often appears in the play as a character, guiding and observing the heroes, acting as a bridge to the generation lost to the HIV/AIDS crisis.
The country retreat: A central house in the countryside — a reference to Howard's End — becomes a place of hospitality and care for terminally ill patients and is then bequeathed in a secretive manner, posing ethical dilemmas for the heroes.
The responsibility to History: The performance raises questions about what today's generation owes to the people who fought in the past for the rights of the community.
