In Greece, over the last decade, there have been leaps in the use and dissemination of information and communication technologies (ICT). In an era of extremely limited public resources, it is estimated that ICT can help the public sector to develop innovatively in providing services to citizens, while simultaneously increasing efficiency and reducing costs. However, much still needs to be done as the country's performance is particularly low regarding the 'digital economy and society' index. Carefully designed policies are required for e-governance to contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty, to protect the environment, to promote social inclusion, and to curb the violation of personal data. The goal is a more democratic and less surveillance-oriented information society. (From the presentation on the back cover of the book)
