The new edition of the classic "Dragon Book" has been completely revised to include the latest developments in compiler design. The book provides a comprehensive introduction to compiler design and continues by emphasizing the application of compiler technology to a wide range of software design and development problems. The first half of the book is designed for use in an undergraduate compiler course, while the second half can be used in a graduate course that emphasizes code optimization. The Gradiance service is an assessment website for assignments and labs for students and instructors. It provides for this book a collection of assignment sets using a special technique called root questions. Students work on a problem as if it were a typical homework assignment. Their knowledge of the solution is tested with a randomly selected multiple-choice question. When a wrong answer is chosen, they receive a hint and immediate feedback, which explains why the answer is wrong or suggests a general approach to the problem. Students then have the opportunity to try the same assignment again. This approach provides immediate reinforcement of compiler concepts.
