In 2002, the American Physical Society, undoubtedly the most distinguished scientific society of physicists in the world, characterized the book "Physics" by Halliday, Resnick, and Walker as "the most outstanding introductory physics book of the 20th century." This unique distinction vividly and succinctly conveys the importance and value of this book. Citing the many other distinctions and accolades it has received internationally would simply reiterate the above observation.
This classic work was first published in 1960 as an introductory physics book for first-year students. Half a century later, refined for decades by its authors and incorporating the comments and observations of dozens of university professors who use it in their institutions, it has acquired an unparalleled educational patina, I would say perfection. It is the "archetype" introductory book of university physics, of the many other introductory texts that attempt to imitate it. It has been translated into more than 40 languages and is estimated that over seven million students have used it.
In physics, for a long time, the scientific community, now globalized, with homogenized symbolism, and common measures and standards, refers to common classic texts. The physics of Halliday, Resnick, and Walker holds a prominent place among these few internationally referenced texts. The translation of this classic work also offers the Greek scientific community an unparalleled educational tool with the aforementioned advantages of common reference.
I had the privilege of collaborating with a team of exceptional translators and a staff of experienced university teachers who edited the individual chapters of the book. The love and care for the book, in general, of the publishing house is well known. With an awareness of the uniqueness of this particular work, we had an excellent collaboration to render into Greek a book worthy and equal to the original. The Greek edition followed the strict quality criteria of the most recent US edition, which is evident in its aesthetically pleasing and quality printing. The Greek student, scientist, or reader can delve into the fundamental concepts of physics utilizing the renowned simplicity and outstanding pedagogical approach of this top-notch text for an introduction to university-level physics.
