Extremely rare collectible bottle of red wine Rioja Siglo Cosecha 1964 from the historic winery Bodegas del Romeral (Félix Azpilicueta Martínez) for sale.
This is an iconic bottle from the 1964 vintage, which is historically considered one of the top and most mythical harvests of the 20th century for the Rioja region of Spain.
Condition & Bottle Characteristics:
Authentic jute sack: In excellent preservation.
Cork & Seal: Sealed, intact, authentic capsule with the embossed seal of Bodegas del Romeral on the top.
Labels: Genuine labels with natural wear over time that certify its authenticity and age.
The significance of traditional jute (Saco de Yute):
The characteristic jute that surrounds the bottle is not just a decorative element, but the historical trademark of Rioja Siglo. It was originally adopted by the winery to protect the wine in the cellar: it provides natural thermal insulation, protects the glass from light, and absorbs moisture, aiding in optimal long-term aging.
Personal Experience & Tasting Notes:
From personal tasting of a bottle from the same batch and storage, the wine performed exceptionally, opened beautifully, revealed the complex character of the 1964 vintage, and stood admirably in the glass — a rare wine experience for anyone who appreciates aged Rioja wines.
Appearance & Color: It has evolved into the classic, deep brick/brown color of a mature 60+ year old Rioja.
Aromas: Rich tertiary character, with a very intense and clear presence of dried thyme and herbs.
Serving: Due to the natural wear of the old cork, filtering, decanting into a carafe, and resting for several hours before consumption in an open carafe (without a cork) is recommended, so it comes into direct contact with oxygen. Initially, immediately after opening, the wine shows a strong acidity due to long-term entrapment in the bottle (reductive environment). However, after a few hours in the carafe, the picture changes radically: the acidity subsides, the wine balances, and releases its herbal aromas.
Serving temperature: Ideally at 18°C (cellar room temperature, not chilled, not warm), to fully showcase its aromas.
Nevertheless, each aged bottle remains unique.
