Rhetoric has been the favorite child of sophistry, and Isocrates is the last great sophist of the classical period: the orator, the educator, the politician. In "Evagoras," all three qualities intertwine; they form the central direction of Isocratic "education through words." Evagoras is recorded in research as a groundbreaking shift in the evolution of rhetorical encomium, as a contemporary historical figure, the Cypriot king Evagoras, takes the place of a mythical praised figure. With this ambitious endeavor, Isocrates had a decisive influence on the evolution of the genre as well as related literary forms, such as biography.
In the present interpretative edition of Evagoras, which constitutes the first autonomous assessment of it, the ancient text, its modern Greek rendering, and systematic commentary are provided. The author's main aim is to initiate the reader into Isocratic ideology in light of the findings of contemporary research. Thus, the focus is on themes such as the rivalry between rhetoric and poetry, the origins of sophistic encomiums and funeral speeches, the moral imperatives of Isocratic philosophy, and the significant relationship between a person's character and actions, which is important for later Plutarchan biography. But most importantly: the reader is called to understand that Isocrates does not depict a historical personality but a political ideal. In this sense, "Evagoras" is part of the spirit of searching for the ideal leader and emanates from the political visions of the time, which provide realistic answers to the theoretical Platonic conception of the philosopher-king.
