With mixed feelings of pride and awe, the Institute of Modern Greek Studies (Manolis Triantafyllidis Foundation) presents to the Greek people the "Dictionary of Modern Greek", the language that was formed in the major urban centers of our country and is currently used by the majority of speakers and writers of Greek in Greece and abroad. It is a dictionary that anyone who loves the modern Greek language and wishes to know it better or to handle it more effectively will refer to. A dictionary, that is, from which one will draw information about the various meanings, the rich uses, the correct inflection, the proper pronunciation, and the valid etymology of the words that make up the diverse and wonderful (and perhaps wonderful because so diverse) mosaic of our language. Therefore, it is not a dictionary that provides encyclopedic information. The introduction provides the reader with detailed information about the character of the dictionary, its contents, and the structure of the entries. In this introductory note, the history of the dictionary is presented in broad strokes, the responsibilities of the many individuals who contributed to its realization are divided, and thanks are expressed to all those who offered their assistance during its long gestation.
