Quantitative ecological methods

ACADEMY OF ATHENS AWARD - 2008

Ecology has evolved in recent decades from a descriptive to a largely quantitative science, useful for understanding, managing, and addressing contemporary ecological-environmental situations, phenomena, and problems. In each chapter of this book, a brief introduction is provided that descriptively delineates the ecological subject of the chapter, and then the application of quantitative methods for the investigation and deepening of the subject is presented. The theoretical presentation and reasoning of each method are accompanied by numerous numerical examples of application, many of which concern real ecological data from the Greek and international literature. Particular emphasis has been placed initially on sampling methods and of course on issues of ecological diversity, spatial arrangement of organisms, species' biogeography, relationships between species in space, similarity of biocommunities, island biogeography, time series, and analysis of population fluctuations.
