"Great Expectations" is the wonderful story of young Pip who lives in the poverty of his village until terrible coincidences bring him to London, into the circles of the 'upper class'. Through Pip's adventures, who observes the world filled with dreams and questions, Dickens describes England during the early industrial age, a harsh time when miracles were still possible. Against the backdrop of the declining countryside and the rapidly developing city, Dickens creates a series of lovable characters (like the kind-hearted Joe and sweet Biddy) who clash with the villains, who also have their justifications. The beautiful Estella is moody and destructive, Miss Havisham is half-mad, Pip's sister is a shrew: and Magwitch, who in his own way is the center of this story, is an outlaw - like Jean Valjean in Les Misérables. However, behind the appearances lie unexpected truths and old secrets that constitute the very plot and drive the heroes' story. Unrequited love, friendship, fate, revenge, class conflicts, social climbing, illness, death, and redemption are described here with realism and humor: the dramatic scenes are shocking, the comedic ones are hilarious, and the former follow the latter in a monumental composition.
