Most scientific writings concerning bullying/victimization issues in schools refer to individual characteristics of perpetrators and victims, family parameters of aggression, school safety, etc., blatantly ignoring that violence is not exclusively the problem of certain individuals, families, or schools, but a social epidemic stemming from the use and abuse of power, sustained by the tolerance of the social environment in which children live, are educated, and grow up. This book examines the phenomenon of victimization in various social contexts, based on theoretical orientations and research findings from the fields of psychology and social sciences. Through a critical view of scientific research, positions and research data are presented that lead to an alternative way of understanding victimization through the deconstruction of concepts, scientific approaches, and practices that sustain the everyday reality of violence in interpersonal relationships. This perspective allows for the correlation of victimization with mechanisms of social selection and the establishment of power patterns that operate inside and outside of school and contributes to the reflection on the prospect of developing effective anti-victimization approaches, negating those forms of hegemonic discourse that shape, permit, and encourage violent attitudes and behaviors.
