From an Introduction to Philosophy, one reasonably expects to be initiated into philosophy. But philosophy is not a branch of knowledge like other established branches in our education system. When we study, for example, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology, we refer to modern textbooks of these sciences where we find codified all the relevant truths. But there is no textbook for philosophy. There is no 'standard' text of philosophy, but many texts: the Platonic, the Aristotelian, the Kantian, etc., meaning there are many endeavors to realize the Idea of philosophy in its historical course, but none of them can be identified with it. The inherent difficulty of an 'Introduction to Philosophy' is, in this case, obvious: it cannot fulfill what it promises to the reader or its apprentice, namely an answer to the question 'what is philosophy?'. As long as the Idea of philosophy is not realized, 'we cannot,' Kant emphasizes, 'teach philosophy, but philosophizing.' This statement of Kant applies - we would say - even more in our time, which no longer believes in the possibility of a systematic unity of knowledge.
If there were a system of philosophical knowledge, then the Introduction to Philosophy would be an easy task: it would have the character of an appropriation or codification of this universal doctrine. But because there is no universal system of philosophy, but various attempts at realization in the historical time of the Idea of philosophy, Kant believes that an Introduction to philosophy cannot be made, but to philosophizing.
