The book can be used for independent, individual study of the subject of databases. The selection, the way of structuring, the development of the material, and the many solved examples-exercises make individual study possible and quite enjoyable without much effort. However, the main purpose of the book is to support students in higher education in a course related to database systems. This course can be considered introductory for computer science departments or complete for other departments and schools that include the subject of databases in their curriculum. In the 2nd edition, I tried to maintain the introductory level of the book, knowing that everything starts from a good beginning. Databases hide behind them a huge theoretical background that - in the book - is used and referred to only in absolutely necessary cases. On the contrary, I tried to gather, structure, and ultimately offer a practical design methodology - based on the corresponding theory - that can be easily understood and lead to the creation of correct databases. The 2nd edition additionally offers a deeper insight into the capabilities of the SQL language, supported by many solved exercises. In the two related chapters, more than 80 solved queries are provided, stemming from my overall educational experience in the subject and gradually approaching almost all levels of difficulty of the topic.
