The film "The Little Mouse" (1954), written by George Asimakopoulos and directed by Grigoris Grigoriou, is recorded as one of the first attempts of Greek cinema to enter the crime genre with seriousness and a narrative that touches the limits of social realism. Beyond its thematic originality, the film has historical significance for another reason: it marks the first cinematic appearance of Aliki Vougiouklaki, in a role that is far from her later cinematic persona.

The story follows Loukis (Giorgos Lefteriotis), a petty criminal who manages to escape from the police after a successful burglary. In his attempt to hide, he will meet the florist Krinoula, who introduces herself as "Little Mouse" (Aliki Vougiouklaki). The girl, full of spontaneity and sensitivity, helps him and soon finds herself with him in the gang's hideout, where he lives with Vaggelis (Nikos Rizos), Christina (Maria Lanyie), and the leader Kostas (Dionysis Papagiannopoulos).

As the days go by, Loukis feels the need to change his life. He rents a room, tries to find honest work, and decides to create something new with Little Mouse. His friend Petros seems to share the same need. However, Kostas cannot tolerate the weakening of the group; his reactions reveal a manipulative, violent character, trapped in control. His attempt to keep those around him tied reminds one of the system of a small mafia structure, where defection is considered betrayal.

The black-and-white film moves in an urban environment, filled with dark rooms, sunless alleys, and small cabarets, where lives intersect in unpredictable ways. Fotis Mesthenaios' lens maintains a dense atmosphere, with interiority and shadows that emphasize the emotional insecurity of the characters. There is no idealization either in the spaces or in the characters. Reality is harsh, and illegality often seems more sincere than social norms.

Aliki Vougiouklaki, in her first appearance, portrays Krinoula with clarity and restrained sweetness. She does not display the intensely expressive style of her later roles but maintains an almost silent tension that ideally serves the character. Her role is not decorative; Little Mouse is the conscience of the film, the starting point for any thought about change and redemption.

Beyond the historical value attributed to the film as the first Greek police production, it also has symbolic weight. Filmed at a time when Greek cinematic habits oscillated between traditional costumes, light comedies, and melodramas, "Little Mouse" dares to tell a story of urban delinquency with seriousness, romanticism, and social pulse. The addition of police elements to a more realistic structure reveals the need of Greek cinema at the time to broaden its expressive avenues.

The contribution of Mimis Fotopoulos, Nikos Rizos, and Rika Dialyna enriches the whole with their experience and stage immediacy. The participation of Rika Dialyna and Aliki Vougiouklaki, both in their cinematic debut, adds particular interest to the film as a chronicle of a beginning that was to shape the future of Greek cinema.

Dionysis Papagiannopoulos, whom the audience is used to seeing in lighter or everyday roles, embodies Kostas with gravity and inner passion. He is a dominating, cold man, but also desperate at the thought of losing control. His performance confirms the range of his talent and how capable he was of transforming according to the demands of the role.
