Rare, museum-quality family heirloom. This is an impressive handmade buckle (clasp) from my great-grandmother, dated around 1900.
Made of "pharmaceutical" silver, the traditional alloy of old silversmiths that provides unique durability and the authentic, deep patina of time.
"Pharmaceutical silver" (or arsenical silver) is a term in traditional silversmithing that describes a specific alloy with particular characteristics.
The term "pharmakon" in ancient Greek often referred to arsenic. Artisans added a small amount of arsenic to the silver alloy. Despite its name, the item is not dangerous to touch, as the content is low and the metal is stabilized.
Old goldsmiths preferred this mixture for two reasons:
