1907, Arithmetic of 4th Grade and not only...
1907, Complete series of numerical problems for the students of the 4th grade of common and full primary schools.
By Ioannis Favatas and the Saliverou editions.
One of the most beautiful school books I have encountered, and this is due to one of the students who used it.
He has written on the cover:
"Arithmetic of the Fourth Grade of Primary School by student Ioannis Politis. In Vasiliki on May 24, 1915, at 11 a.m. on a Sunday!!!"
On the back cover, in large letters, his initials: I. K. P.
He has cut the corners of the pages in a curved shape, perhaps because he thought it would look more aesthetically pleasing, although it is very likely that after 8 years of use, they would have filled with "ears".
The book was licensed and published in 1907, for the five-year period 1906 – 1911.
However, the student's inscription is from 1915.
Poor Greece, books reused, but beyond the economic need to preserve them, what respect for them!
On the other hand, one cannot help but notice the content, which although it was for the Fourth Grade of Primary School, would likely leave a modern first-year high school student completely helpless.
Perhaps this was the most significant problem of the time in teaching. The teachers, in their effort to raise educated Neo-Greeks, were very strict with the children and excessively ambitious with their goals.
However, many of them did not stop researching and trying to find the best approach.
There are many more books concerning educational studies from that time, some of which are still wonderful today.
Nikolaos Exarchopoulos, Dimitris Glinos, and the Experimental School were perhaps the peaks in this effort to create the new Greek education.
But alas, today we borrow not even entire foreign practices.
With 61 pages (plus the remaining present ones).
Old school books, old readers.
