"After we defeated Darius, the king of Persia, and his men and subdued the entire country, we made a journey to see all its wonders... and many more wonders.

We began our journey from the Caspian Gates. At the 10th hour, the trumpets sounded the call for dinner... Everyone went to sleep. As soon as the sun rose, the trumpets sounded... until the 4th hour. The soldiers' preparation was so complete that each had their own sandals, greaves, leather knee pads, and breastplates. The natives had warned me about the deadly reptiles on the road, so I ordered that no one go outside without this protection..."

This novel is one of the most enduring and significant works of antiquity. It has been rewritten and enriched many times, resulting in at least 3 very different texts. The first version, which is now lost, was translated, with variations, into Syriac, Ethiopian, Armenian, and Pahlavi, from which it contributed stories to the Quran and mainly inspired Persian writers. A Latin version from the third century AD served as the basis for the extensive traditions of Alexander in medieval Europe, known from texts in more than 12 languages. It has been translated into English, French, German, Swedish, Italian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Romanian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Spanish-Arabic, Hebrew, etc.

The novel "The Great Alexander" presents the life and works of the great conqueror, according to the myths and traditions preserved in the memory of the peoples he conquered.
